The Unpopular Opinions Book Tag!

Emma over at Em Does Book Reviews tagged me to do the Unpopular Opinions Book Tag and I couldn’t be more excited. Even before I got to the end and saw I was tagged I thought, “Oooh, this looks like a fun one! I wanna do it!” So, let’s hop to it! (Click on a title to read my review.)

A popular book/series you didn’t like

Here’s a truckload:

       

• Half Bad by Sally Green. Nope. Nope, nope. Couldn’t do this. I know there are tons of fans, though, but Half Bad really wasn’t my kind of thing.
• How I Live Now by Meg Rosoff. Emma and I actually both hated this book, and yet it won a Printz Award and was turned into a movie and has obvious fans. Emma’s review is definitely worth reading, though. It’s a really great critical review that talks about everything and more. (My review is pretty bland compared to hers!)
• Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Ashers. I read this a long time ago, but I hated it. I briefly bonded with Cait about how we both dislike this book.
• Fallen by Lauren Kate. Urgh, I wanna puke this book out of my memory. This is such a popular series. A lot of other people hate it, too, but there are huge fans out there.
• Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl. I also watched the movie purely because of Emma Thompson. Um. The movie was terrible, too.
• The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman. Aaaah, don’t hate me! I’ve read this book twice. First time I didn’t like, but I couldn’t understand why. So I read it again a few years later and still didn’t like it. I’m willing to give it another try, though, because I really want to figure out why I seem to be the only person who doesn’t like this Newbery Award winning book.
• The entire Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer. Which I somehow read in its entirety. The romance is an abusive relationship, Bella is as appealing as cardboard, and the whole imprinting on the baby thing just weirded me out. If I had to pick my favorite, I liked New Moon the best because Edward was absent for most of it. My least favorite was definitely that monstrosity that was Breaking Dawn.
• And, for good measure, my most hated classic ever: The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame. I’ve ranted about The Wind in the Willows before, so I’m going to quickly squash my rage and move on to the next question. BUT MR. TOAD OR WHATEVER HIS NAME IS INFURIATED ME AND WILL FOREVER INFURIATE ME.

A book/series you love but everyone seems to hate

 

• I didn’t love Seeker by Arwen Elys Dayton at all, far from it — I had a huge amount of problems with it — but I liked it a lot more than most people seemed to. So many reviewers DNF-ed this book, but I never had thoughts of DNF-ing it.
• Also, I really liked Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins — and so many readers hated it. While I think The Hunger Games is the best book in the series, I thought Mockingjay was excellent, and even after I reread it I still really liked it. (Catching Fire I didn’t like all that much.)

A love triangle where the main character ended up with the wrong person, or, an OTP you don’t like

This is hard. I can’t think of any love triangles where I wasn’t happy or at least okay with the person so-and-so ended up with. Also, I can’t think of any OTPs I haven’t shipped. I can think of a bunch where it took me a book or two to be on board with the ship, but none that I disliked the whole time. (I’m leaving books I hated out of the equation because I didn’t specifically hate the triangle/ship, I hated the whole darn book.) I’m sure there are some that I’ve read, but none have struck me so much that I remember disliking them. Sorry for the lame answer!

A popular genre you hardly reach for

Romance and mystery are genres I really don’t read much. I like romance in addition to a plot, but I don’t have much interest in reading books solely about romantic relationships. And I kind of actually want to get more into mysteries, but I prefer other genres so much more that I really don’t have the time to devote to getting into a new genre.

A popular character you do not like

Katniss Everdeen. Every time I reread The Hunger Games (I’ve read it three times now, I think) I dislike Katniss more and more. On one hand I understand her character and her bitterness, but on the other hand I just don’t really like her. It’s what happens to her that I find interesting about the books.

A popular author you cannot seem to get into

I don’t remember trying to read numerous books by an author to see if I can find the magic one that hooks me. I don’t waste my time on that.

EDIT: Ally Condie. I’ve read Matched, Crossed, and Atlantia. I liked Atlantia, but it was pretty uneven. Matched was interesting enough but the sequel was a hot mess. I’m probably not going to read any more books by Ally, sadly.

A popular trope you are tired of seeing

Love triangles. Who even likes love triangles anymore? I also hate rape as a plot device. I don’t know how all that popular it is, but it comes up a considerate amount and I have no patience for it.

EDIT: Also, insta-love. I might hate insta-love more than love triangles at this point.

A popular series you have no interest in reading

I’m pretty sure I’ll never read the House of Night novels by P.C. and Kristin Cast. Aren’t there, like, twelve of them??! From what I hear, the series really didn’t/doesn’t need to be that long.

The book is not always better than the movie…

   

• Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. (Don’t hate me, HP fans! I’m one of you, too!) I mean, the book is wonderful, but the movie is just utter perfection. It’s my favorite Harry Potter film but, interestingly, one of my least favorite books in the series — and I love all the Harry Potter books! (I also know that a lot of people hate the third film. But to each their own.)
• Also, I enjoy the 2005 Pride and Prejudice film over the book. The novel is great and all, but the movie translates everything flawlessly. (I also am aware that some people hate the 2005 adaptation. Well, this is my unpopular opinions tag!)
